Shelf uses melamine — also called thermally fused laminate or TFL — for all custom closet systems. Melamine is the industry standard: it’s a hard resin coating fused to a 3/4" MDF or particleboard core that is scratch resistant, moisture resistant, warp resistant, and extremely easy to clean. It’s available in many colors including white, espresso, grey, and wood grain finishes.

Wire shelving is common in new construction because it’s cheap and fast to install, but it has real drawbacks: wire marks can indent clothing, small items fall through gaps, there are no drawer or cabinet options, and it has a utilitarian look. Melamine shelving is solid, smooth, and can hold 3 to 4 times more storage than wire. It also allows for drawers, doors, shoe shelving, and a fully custom layout.
